The Setting

If you landed on this page, you probably already know the what-where-who of York Beach, but just in case, I’ll tell you a little bit about the setting of York Beach Love Story.

Gateway to Vacationland

Kittery Foreside and the Outlets are the real gatekeepers of the state of Maine, AKA Vacationland, but York is just 7 miles north of the New Hampshire border on I95. It’s the last exit before the Maine Turnpike tolls begin. If you happen to miss your exit, you’re paying 2 tolls and driving an extra 24 miles to get back.

If you hear someone refer to the area as “The Yorks” it’s because there are four distinct zones in York: York Village, York Harbor, York Beach, Cape Neddick, each with its own character.

Something for everyone

From beaches for relaxing, playing in the sand – and if you can brave the frigid water temps – for swimming and surfing, to the harbor & the rivers for boating, fishing, and kayaking, there’s something for everyone. If you’re more of a land explorer, check out Mount Agamenticus for hiking and birdwatching.

Hungry?

York’s restaurants won’t disappoint. Whether you’re looking for upscale or casual, ocean view or farm style, whether you’re craving seafood or something else, there’s a perfect place for you in York. There are even two breweries, a distillery and a pub that makes you feel like you’re on a ship.

And then there are the attractions – the zoo, a wiggly bridge, a lighthouse, a historical museum and so much more. If you like to shop, there is an array of stores – offering one-of-a-kind, unique shopping experiences.

I will tell you about all our favorite spots in future posts!

Local Scene

When the ‘season’ is over, the population decreases and the locals take back their town. The streets get quiet and many businesses close, but there are a few beacons of light where you can still get a meal with your family or sit at a bar with friends.

At Long Sands… you can take a long peaceful walk at low tide and run into almost no one… except for surfers, dog walkers and a few beachcombers that summer left behind. The off season is especially magical for dogs, since there are no time restrictions or leash rules at this time of year.

Wedding Hub

All of these things have made York a top New England wedding destination. I’m still working on the statistics, but there are a few dozen official venues (plus grandma’s backyard) and 12 weeks of summer, so it’s safe to estimate that there are hundreds of weddings each year! Those weddings bring revenue to almost all the small businesses in town – retail, service, hospitality and more.
